{"id":850,"date":"2021-09-28T13:08:17","date_gmt":"2021-09-28T13:08:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.blog-thebrain.org\/?p=8195"},"modified":"2022-01-04T19:50:08","modified_gmt":"2022-01-04T19:50:08","slug":"two-pioneers-in-research-on-neurogenesis-and-vision","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.blog-thebrain.org\/advanced\/2021\/09\/28\/two-pioneers-in-research-on-neurogenesis-and-vision\/","title":{"rendered":"Two pioneers in research on neurogenesis and vision"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-9324\" src=\"https:\/\/www.blog-lecerveau.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/Capture-decran-2021-02-08-102726.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"411\" height=\"296\" \/>Today I just want to draw your attention to two researchers who are senior citizens but still active and still inspiring: Fred Gage and Deric Bownds.<\/p>\n<p>Fred Gage recently gave <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/science\/neuroscientists-research-helped-unearth-how-human-brains-can-make-new-cells\/2021\/02\/05\/5ae79ea4-60be-11eb-9430-e7c77b5b0297_story.html?fbclid=IwAR2sIaoQX_lUB0X20tkDzy1_paw4oyj1Mvqyz2bqjwOGSv1xyEckvuyXjWI\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><span style=\"color: #808080;\">an interview on his scientific career<\/span><\/strong><\/a>, in which he told how he became a pioneer in research on <span style=\"color: #008080;\"><a style=\"color: #008080;\" href=\"https:\/\/thebrain.mcgill.ca\/flash\/capsules\/histoire_bleu05.html\">neurogenesis<\/a><\/span>\u2014the development of new neurons in the brains of adult mammals. It\u2019s always interesting to learn about the scientific career of <a href=\"https:\/\/science.sciencemag.org\/content\/364\/6443\/827\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><span style=\"color: #808080;\">someone who disproved an idea that was previously dogma<\/span><\/strong><\/a>. In Gage\u2019s case, it was the idea that had emerged during the last decades of the 20th century that when humans are born, their brains contain as many neurons as they will ever have and will only continue to lose them as their lives go on.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Although Gage disproved this bit of dogma, controversy remains as to which specific parts of the human brain neurogenesis can occur in, and up to what age. But one thing is certain: the two factors that Gage identified as greatly favouring neurogenesis in the brains of rodents \u2014 exercise and a rich, stimulating environment \u2014 are still two of the most beneficial things for the brain as a whole.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">* * *<\/p>\n<p>Regarding Deric Bownds, I just want to mark the 15<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary of his blog, <strong><span style=\"color: #808080;\"><a style=\"color: #808080;\" href=\"https:\/\/mindblog.dericbownds.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Deric\u2019s MindBlog<\/a><\/span><\/strong>. Now retired, Bownds <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dericbownds.net\/ProfHistory.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><span style=\"color: #808080;\">did research on the molecular mechanisms of vision<\/span><\/strong>,<\/a> in particular on the <a href=\"https:\/\/thebrain.mcgill.ca\/flash\/i\/i_02\/i_02_m\/i_02_m_vis\/i_02_m_vis.html#2\"><span style=\"color: #008080;\">photoreceptor cells in the retina<\/span><\/a> that convert light energy into neural activity. Every day in his blog, he briefly summarizes a recent study in cognitive neuroscience and places it in the context of current debates in this vast field of research. His posts are so timely that I always provide links to his five most recent ones <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blog-thebrain.org\/blog\/2013\/02\/18\/4-new-rss-feeds-for-recent-news-about-the-brain\/\"><span style=\"color: #008080;\">in the left-hand margin of the blog you\u2019re reading now<\/span><\/a>.
