From one day to the next, a person wakes up speaking with what sounds like an accent from another country.<\/p>\n<p>But in fact, this similarity is merely random. Scientists now know that foreign accent syndrome is actually a particular kind of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thebrain.mcgill.ca\/flash\/i\/i_10\/i_10_p\/i_10_p_lan\/i_10_p_lan.html#3\"><span style=\"color: #008080;\">aphasia <\/span><\/a>that produces slight alterations in the\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thebrain.mcgill.ca\/flash\/a\/a_10\/a_10_cr\/a_10_cr_lan\/a_10_cr_lan.html#4\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">prosody<\/span><\/a> of language. Listeners then perceive these unusual variations in the rhythm and meolody of the person\u2019s speech as a foreign accent.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Foreign accent syndrome can result from many different kinds of events that disrupt activity in certain very specific parts of the brain.
