{"id":524,"date":"2016-05-10T14:27:51","date_gmt":"2016-05-10T14:27:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.blog-thebrain.org\/?p=1174"},"modified":"2022-01-04T19:48:58","modified_gmt":"2022-01-04T19:48:58","slug":"dynamics-of-complex-networks-sheds-light-on-loss-of-consciousness-associated-with-sleep","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.blog-thebrain.org\/beginner\/2016\/05\/10\/dynamics-of-complex-networks-sheds-light-on-loss-of-consciousness-associated-with-sleep\/","title":{"rendered":"Dynamics of complex networks sheds light on loss of consciousness associated with sleep"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1178 alignleft\" title=\"sommeil-conscience\" src=\"https:\/\/www.blog-thebrain.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sommeil-conscience.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"132\" height=\"120\" \/>When I read the abstract of the article \u201cHierarchical clustering of brain activity during human nonrapid eye movement sleep\u201d published by Dr Habib Benali and his team in the April 2012 issue of the journal <em>Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America<\/em> (PNAS), I quickly realized that the phenomenon that these authors had observed was pretty much the opposite of the one observed in a <span style=\"color: #008080;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blog-thebrain.org\/2016\/03\/21\/awareness-as-a-temporary-breakdown-of-the-brains-functional-networks\/\"><span style=\"color: #008080;\">study by Douglass Godwin and his team<\/span><\/a><\/span>: the temporary breakdown of the brain\u2019s functional networks when an individual becomes aware of a stimulus.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>In the Benali study, the research team used functional magnetic resonance imaging to measure functional connectivity among various parts of the brain. These measurements showed that when the subjects fell into <span style=\"color: #008080;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thebrain.mcgill.ca\/flash\/i\/i_11\/i_11_p\/i_11_p_cyc\/i_11_p_cyc.html\"><span style=\"color: #008080;\">non-REM sleep<\/span><\/a><\/span>, in which their consciousness was reduced, their brain activity became less connected and more fragmented (modular). The authors hypothesize that this reorganization of brain activity into smaller and smaller independent modules during non-REM sleep prevents the brain from performing the overall integration of information that seems to be necessary for consciousness. This idea was first advanced some time ago by <span style=\"color: #008080;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thebrain.mcgill.ca\/flash\/i\/i_12\/i_12_p\/i_12_p_con\/i_12_p_con.html#5\"><span style=\"color: #008080;\">Bernard Baars, with his theory of the global workspace<\/span><\/a><\/span>, and has now received support from a number of recent studies, including the one by Godwin and his team.<\/p>\n<p>Taken together, these two studies clearly seem to point to something like a pooling of brain activity into extensive networks when it comes to <span style=\"color: #ff9900;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thebrain.mcgill.ca\/flash\/d\/d_12\/d_12_p\/d_12_p_con\/d_12_p_con.html\"><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">conscious phenomena<\/span><\/a><\/span> and a fragmentation of brain activity into smaller modules that perform certain computations locally, when it comes to <span style=\"color: #008080;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thebrain.mcgill.ca\/flash\/i\/i_12\/i_12_p\/i_12_p_con\/i_12_p_con.html#4\"><span style=\"color: #008080;\">unconscious phenomena<\/span><\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>Benali\u2019s study also sheds a bit of light on some apparent paradoxes, such as that when you are asleep and unconscious, your brain remains just as active as when you are awake.
