Why? Because <span style=\"color: #008080;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blog-thebrain.org\/blog\/2016\/07\/26\/1207\/\"><span style=\"color: #008080;\">yet another study<\/span><\/a><\/span>, since <span style=\"color: #008080;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blog-thebrain.org\/blog\/2016\/02\/29\/when-advertisements-steal-our-attention\/\"><span style=\"color: #008080;\">the first one by Roger Ulrich in 1984<\/span><\/a><\/span>, has confirmed the benefits of natural environments for reducing our tendency to ruminate (focus our thoughts repetitively on negative aspects of ourselves). This new study was done by Gregory Bratman and his colleagues. It is entitled \u201c<strong><span style=\"color: #808080;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pnas.org\/content\/112\/28\/8567.full\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #808080;\">Nature experience reduces rumination and subgenual prefrontal cortex activation<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/strong>\u201d, and it was published in the journal <em>PNAS<\/em> in July 2015.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Bratman\u2019s study divided the subjects into two groups of 20 individuals. The individuals in the first group took a 90-minute walk in an urban setting, while those in the second did so in a natural setting (the two settings are shown in the photos above). Afterward, using a standardized questionnaire and <span style=\"color: #008080;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thebrain.mcgill.ca\/flash\/capsules\/outil_bleu13.htm#irmf\"><span style=\"color: #008080;\">functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI)<\/span><\/a><\/span>, the researchers found that the subjects who had taken their walks in the natural setting reported fewer negative thoughts about themselves and showed less neural activity in certain areas of the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thebrain.mcgill.ca\/flash\/a\/a_08\/a_08_cr\/a_08_cr_dep\/a_08_cr_dep.html\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">subgenual prefrontal cortex (sgPFC)<\/span><\/a><\/span> and in a neighbouring area of the anterior cingulate cortex that had been associated in past studies with phenomena such as remorse, negative autobiographical narratives, and social rejection.<\/p>\n<p>It should of course be kept in mind that these areas are part of a <span style=\"color: #008080;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blog-thebrain.org\/blog\/2013\/10\/01\/we-are-all-complex-networks\/\"><span style=\"color: #008080;\">complex brain network<\/span><\/a><\/span> and that it is always somewhat risky to try to attribute a functional significance to a variation in activity in a particular part of the brain. But the fact remains that these findings are highly consistent with those of many past studies showing just how much natural environments calm us and improve our mental health. And that should be no surprise: we humans <span style=\"color: #008080;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thebrain.mcgill.ca\/flash\/i\/i_05\/i_05_p\/i_05_p_her\/i_05_p_her.html\"><span style=\"color: #008080;\">evolved over very long periods<\/span><\/a><\/span> in natural settings, compared with which urbanization is an extremely recent phenomenon.
